College Football Picks Week 6

Now this is more like it!  Conference play is starting up which means there’s a lot of interesting match ups on the horizon.  This week features games between five ranked teams, two of which are Top-10 showdowns.  Let’s analyze the slate, starting with an SEC contest in “The Swamp”.

LSU versus Florida

(4) LSU

(5-0, 1-0 SEC)

(10) Florida

(4-0, 3-0 SEC)

Both squads have passed every test with flying colors.  Quarterback Jeff Driskel has turned into a strong offensive leader for Florida, while LSU QB Zach Mettenberger has done the same for his team.  Both sides also have a strong running game as well, headlined by Florida’s Mike Gillislee and LSU’s Kenny Hilliard.  Talent and experience win in this one though, as LSU’s defense gives Driskel a hard time, and the Tigers make more big plays.

My Pick:  LSU

Georgia versus South Carolina

(5) Georgia

(5-0, 3-0 SEC)

(6) South Carolina

(5-0, 3-0 SEC)

Gosh I’m drooling, another Top-10 match up.  Georgia surprisingly hasn’t pooped themselves, and they’ve proven to be one of the top teams in the country.  While South Carolina on the other hand has gotten strong milking Marcus Lattimore all season.  This looks like it could go either way, but in the past Lattimore has gotten the better of this Georgia team.  I like Aaron Murray as a quarterback, but I’d have more confidence in him if he wasn’t going against Jadeveon Clowney and if he wasn’t in Columbia.  I think that fumble recovery by Clowney at the end of the game last year more than speaks for itself.

My Pick:  South Carolina

West Virginia versus Texas

(8) West Virginia

(4-0, 1-0 Big 12)

(11) Texas

(4-0, 1-0 Big 12)

I know it’s at Texas, but it’s hard to go against Geno Smith, especially based off of the offensive explosion he put up against Baylor.  I have questions about West Virginia’s defense, but I think Geno Smith can put enough distance between Texas and any mishaps his team might have.

My Pick:  West Virginia

Nebraska versus Ohio State

(21) Nebraska

(4-1, 1-0 Big Ten)

(12) Ohio St

(5-0, 1-0 Big Ten)

I severely underestimated Braxton Miller last week.  He has proven to be a dynamic play maker that can both run and pass the ball (sort of a Dernard Robinson Jr.).  Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez has proven to be a strong play maker for Nebraska as well, but I just don’t trust him on the road in an extremely hostile environment.  Urban Meyer is also going to have his team jacked for the Big Ten home opener.  Not much you can do about that.

My Pick:  Ohio State

Sorry dad!

Washington versus Oregon

(23) Washington

(3-1, 1-0 Pac-12)

(2) Oregon

(5-0, 2-0 Pac-12)

Allow me to take some time to address the white elephant in this room.  Yes I picked against UW last week, and yes I said Stanford would win, and yes I agree that bit me in the butt.  That was one heck of a win, and if you beat a Top-10 team you deserve to be ranked, but that was at home.  I don’t have a lot of confidence picking a recently ranked team going to the NUMBER TWO RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY IN A PLACE NOTORIOUS FOR ITS HOME-FIELD EDGE.  Sorry, but even the most die-hard husky fans have to agree with me on this one.

My Pick:  Oregon

My record:  12-9

Hopefully I go a perfect 5-0 this week and my Cougs get a much needed win against Oregon State on the road.

  1. Remember it never rains at Autzen. I honestly believe that Florida is ridiculously over rated. I don't see them winning more than 7 games this year.
