Lady Cougs Outscore Their Two Exhibition Opponents 160 to 82

This past week the Lady Cougar Basketball team kicked off its 2012-2013 Basketball Season by playing too exhibition games on Friel Court at Beasley Coliseum. These games were against two division two opponents and as a result a lot of the players got to see playing time in these two sparsely attended tune up games. Now the title makes the Cougar offense look prolific (for women’s basketball) and their defense look just as stout.

That title is also slightly misleading as the Cougs won their first game against Simon Fraser 67-52 in a defensive struggle that saw the final score be closer than I expected it to be. In the second game the Lady Cougs dominated possession and outshot Western Oregon University as they cruised to a 93-30 victory. It would be ridiculous to read too much into these games as they were against a lower level of competition but there still signs of promise that this year could be the Cougs first trip to postseason basketball in a loooonnnngggg time.

Interesting Statistics:

  1. 33: The number of turnovers the defense forced during their game against Simon Fraser.
  2. +44: The rebounding margin that the Cougs had against Western Oregon.
  3. 13: The number of players whom scored against Western Oregon.
  4. 43.5%: The shooting percentage the Cougs put up during these basketball games.

Sorry for the lack of stats, WSU does not have detailed statistics available for these exhibition games. Next week’s update should be more interesting to look at from a statistical point of view as the regular season kicks off.

Next Week’s Game:

November 10th: at Minnesota (Best Buy Classic)

November 11th: Winner of South Dakota State/Villanova (Best Buy Classic)
