Will the Sonics be back by 2017?

The Seattle SuperSonics haven’t existed since the original franchise relocated to Oklahoma City following the 2007-08 season. But the fan base still exist, and is still fighting to get its team back; and it seemed like only the fans were the ones fighting to get the team back. That is until Chris Hansen showed up in February, 2012 with his arena proposal for the SODO area in Seattle, and his bid to buy the Sacramento Kings from January-May, 2013 (which ended with Sacramento getting to keep the team). Despite losing out on the Kings, Hansen hasn’t gone away…and more importantly, neither has the fan base.

And now it seems like the Sonics will be back, and back before the current Memorandum of Understanding between Chris Hansen and Seattle expires in November, 2017. As SonicsRising managing editor Kevin Nesgoda dropped a major bomb in this comment thread over on the site:

by 2017 we’ll be enjoying the second year back of the Sonics.

Oh and did I mention that, according to Nesgoda, the return of the Sonics is not contingent on Milwuakee getting its arena situation figured out? No…well then, here you go:

If that’s contingent on us being the boogeyman for Milwaukee, then that’s false hope.

So maybe it’s time for basketball fans in Seattle to get excited again. After all, this is probably the most promising news to come to Seattle NBA fans since it was announced that Steve Ballmer was part of Hansen’s ownership group.

We should all be tuning into SonicsRising for more information about the return of the Sonics.
