College Football Week 6 Preview

I am 10-6 so far on the young season, which isn’t bad, but could be better.  Let’s start with a Top-10 matchup between two SEC teams.

12:30 PM PT CBS TA&M -7.0

9 Tennessee

(5-0, 2-0 SEC)

8 Texas A&M

(5-0, 3-0 SEC)

How Tennessee Wins: Joshua Dobbs puts in work and plays as clutch as he did in Tennessee’s last-second victory over the Georgia Bulldogs last week.  I think the key for this team is to get out to a lead early and don’t look back.  Consistency is the name of the game here.

How Texas A&M Wins:  This might actually be the best school in Texas.  Trevor Knight is looking like a potential Heisman candidate and this is a statement game for him.  SEAHAWKS FANS DON’T LOOK PAST HERE!  Kyle Field is also home to the 12th Man, and that is a tough place to play.  Derek Barnett and Myles Garrett also know how to rush the passer so look for them to make big plays on the other side of the ball too.

The Bottom Line:  Tennessee’s luck is going to run out eventually.  It will run out tomorrow, and Texas A&M will continue to be one of the surprises of the season no one is talking about.

12:30 PM PT UNC -1.5

25 Virginia Tech

(3-1, 1-0 ACC)

17 North Carolina

(4-1, 2-0 ACC)

How Virginia Tech Wins:  Jerod Evans continues his steady play.  He has thrown for 13 touchdowns and only one interception on the season.  Tech also needs to balance their attack with Travon McMillian running the ball.  They will need to do things well on both sides of the ball to win in Chapel Hill.

How North Carolina Wins:  Mitch Trubisky has been on fire. 1711 passing yards, and 13 touchdowns is definitely nothing to sniff at.  Look for him to connect with Ryan Switzer early.  Switzer has 587 receiving yards on the year, so as long as he keeps the consistency up the Tar Heels will have more than a chance in this one.

The Bottom Line:  I will be dead honest with you on this one, I could care less about either team, and I don’t know much about either team.  North Carolina did almost spoil Clemson’s Playoff hopes last year, so I’m going with them.  Especially because they are at home.

4:00 PM PT ESPN ALA -14.0

1 Alabama

(5-0, 2-0 SEC)

16 Arkansas

(4-1, 0-1 SEC)

How Alabama Wins:  Keep running the ball and play good defense.  Remember what happened in Week 3 against Ole Miss when you were down 21 early in that one.  Don’t let Jalen Hurts do too much in this one, and get all the one-on-one’s you can get with Calvin Ridley.

How Arkansas Wins:  Oh boy!  Austin Allen needs to go off at quarterback.  Hog fans are wild so he should get a nice boost from the home crowd here in this one.  Rawleigh Williams III also should provide a nice boost in the backfield.  Don’t turn the ball over and you might win this one.

The Bottom Line:  Bama is favored by 14 for a reason.  Don’t overthink this, take them.

5:00 PM PT ABC MIAMI -3.0

23 Florida State

(3-2, 0-2 ACC)

10 Miami

(4-0, 1-0 ACC)

How Florida State Wins:  Quarterback Deondre Francois and running back Dalvin Cook need to get their swagger back.  Yes they lost to North Carolina, and yes it was embarrassing, but they need to move on to face their rivals.  As long as their defense isn’t as porous as they have been recently, they should have a chance here.

How Miami Wins:  As long as Hurricane Matthew doesn’t have a thing or two to say about the home-field advantage, the crowd should be there.  The Hurricanes don’t have any really sexy players, but all they’ve done is win so far and that’s all that matters.  Gash Florida State’s weak defense and make them pay.

The Bottom Line:  I am trusting Florida State less and less each week.  Louisville I can understand, North Carolina not so much.  I expect Miami to win this one and knock Florida State out of the Top 25.
