We’re a month through the 2018 Major League baseball standings, and they’re pretty much broken right now. No seriously, take a look.
There are currently 19 teams with a .500 or better record in Major League Baseball, 18 teams currently have a better than .500 record. That’s 60% of teams in the league that are currently winning the majority of their games. Which is kind of insane.
A large reason for the craziness this season is the six teams that are clearly tanking in order to obtain picks at the top of the 2019 draft by being as bad as possible. Those culprits are the Chicago White Sox (9-23), the Texas Rangers (14-23), the Baltimore Orioles (8-26), the Cincinnati Reds (8-27), the Miami Marlins (13-21), and the San Diego Padres (13-22). These teams have been easy wins for anyone with a pulse this year and it’s blowing up the number of wins each team has earned throughout the beginning of the season.
It’s likely that these teams will suck even worse as the year moves along which will continue to inflate the number of wins it takes to get into the playoffs. This will be interesting to keep an eye on as the year progresses.
