Happy Halloween everyone, from your favorite spoopy sports podcast hosts! Lots to talk about this week, as WSU debuted at No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings, everything is on fire over at Montlake, Edgar Martinez is changing jobs, and the Seahawks look like they may just be a good football team.
We start with WSU, because it’s rare that they’re the most interesting team in town, and there’s no way Brett’s going to let anything else lead the show when WSU is ranked in single digits in the College Football Playoff rankings! We talk about the Cougs’ big win over Stanford, the emergence of Gardner Minshew as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate, and look ahead to this week’s tough matchup against California.
Shifting to the other side of the state, things aren’t so rosy over in Husky town. UW dropped Saturday’s contest 12-10 to California, and many Husky fans are pointing the finger squarely at Chris Petersen for benching Jake Browning with a 7-6 lead. It’s easy to point that finger when his backup came in and promptly through what ended up being the game-deciding pick six, but does he deserve it? We discuss that, and look ahead to UW’s massive contest against Stanford this Saturday.
The Seahawks took care of business in Detroit easily, spanking Detroit 28-14, and the game didn’t really even look as close as the score would indicate. The Seahawks have jumped up all the way up to 6th in the DVOA rankings, including 2nd overall in defense. Is it real, or is it a mirage? And is Russell Wilson playing the best football of his career? We discuss all of that, and offer Pete Carroll and apology for doubting him. Fans will get a good idea of how good the Seahawks truly are this Sunday when the Los Angeles Chargers come to town–likely the second-best opponent Seattle has faced this year. This game will go a long way towards telling us what kind of team the Seahawks are going to be this season.
The World Series has come and gone, and one of us wants to talk about it and the other doesn’t care in the least. Betcha can’t guess who feels what!
Sticking to baseball, both of us responded to a Joe Posnanski tweet asking what changes we’d make to baseball if we were strangely appointed to the office of commissioner. One of us wants to move baseball into the modern age, and the other is content to let it remain in bedrock.
We wrap up the show by briefly talking about Edgar Martinez’s position change with the Mariners, and looking ahead to what plans we have this weekend, like voting and going to football games. By the way, people, you should vote. That’s as political as we’re going to get. Also, be sure to take note of the ingredients of any chili you eat. Stay safe, stay spoopy. Happy Halloween, BSers!
