No. 18 WSU soccer will host Montana in first round of NCAA Tournament

No. 18 Washington State (13-2-4, 7-1-3) earned an at-large bid to host Montana (13-5-1, 7-1-1) on Saturday November 13th at 5 PM at the Lower Soccer Field in Pullman, Wash. The match-up was announced during the NCAA selection show on Monday afternoon.

Montana closed out the season with six straight wins. This streak included two wins in the Big Sky Conference tournament to win the title and clinch the conference’s automatic bid for the NCAA tournament. The Grizzles defense allowed a grand total of 12 goals in their 19 matches — for an average of .63 goals per match. Once they hit conference play Montana’s defense found its stride as it took until the road trip to Northern Colorado for the Griz to give up their first conference goal.

Taylor Stoeger is the squad’s leading goal scorer as she’s scored seven goals in 1,286 minutes played in the 2021 season. After Stoeger, is Sydney Haustein whom scored five goals.

In the net Camellia Xu has seen the most time for the Grizzles, she’s allowed 11 goals in 18 matches while she also made 82 saves throughout the season.

For Washington State this marks the fifth time under Todd Shulenberger that its reached the NCAA tournament and the first time since the program’s historic run to the 2019 College Cup — the Cougars didn’t qualify for the post season during the 2020 season. This appearance comes on the heals of a dominant 4-2 victory in Seattle against in-state rival Washington to secure a third place finish in conference play with 24 points.
