WSU’s Johanna Teder wins Pac-12 player of the week

After Washington State women’s basketball’s historic weekend, that saw the second straight upset of top 10 Arizona team, junior guard Johanna Teder was named the Pac-12 Player of the week. The junior put together back-to-back 20+ point performances as the Cougars swept the Arizona schools in their final home stand of the weekend.

Teder’s best performance came against No. 8 Arizona as she not only scored 21 points, but also dished out six assist with three steals. With 1:53 left in the game she took a beautiful pass from Charlisse Leger-Walker and hit a wide open three to push WSU’s lead out to five; on the next offensive possession she got the ball and drove the lane to hit the relatively easy layup to make it 65-58 with 1:12 left. The junior was then fouled on the Cougs’ next offensive possession and drained both free throws to make it 67-58 with 50 seconds left on the clock. Her 7-0 run in the span of a minute was arguably the deciding factor in the game as it forced the Wildcats to keep sending WSU up to the charity stripe.

Against Arizona State, the guard scored 20 points and saw 40 minutes on the court — which was needed because Charlisse ended up fouling out in the middle of the fourth quarter. Teder had five assist to go along with five rebounds as well. Her offensive presence on the court offset the off night for Kyrstal Leger-Walker and Charlisse’s absence after she had fouled out. Again, it was Teder who set the stage and forced the other side to start fouling when she hit a jumpshot with 1:11 to get the Cougars’ lead out to 58-54; she also hit a pair of free throws to cap off her scoring on Friday night.

Washington State will take the reigning conference player of the week to the Bay Area as they face No. 2 Stanford on Thursday, February 24th at 8 PM on Pac-12 Network — the Cougs are still looking for their first win in that series — and then they close out the regular season against Cal on Saturday, February 26th. A split on the road trip guarantees the Cougars their first ever first round-bye in the Pac-12 Tournament.
